WhatcomRadio

NW Washington Amateur Radio

DG Upcoming Meeting

Tuesday March 18th at the Ferndale Library at 7PM.

Thus far on the agenda:

  • Progress on our D-Star experiments. Including the D-Rats software by Dan Smith.
  • The Vancouver Island EmComm folks have invited us to test their Telpac access on VE7SKR-10  We gave this information previously, but they have advised us that the telpac is at a lower elevation and that will probably have to be accessed via VE7TPS-2.  Please try this access and report your success or failure at the meeting.
  • Doyle KC7GX had created an organizational chart of Amateur Radio Emergency Communications resources in Whatcom County and would appreciate our review and input on it.  This is a large and complex document that could not be easily displayed on screen, so I will have a hard copy at the meeting.
  • Mert AC7KY will do a show and tell on the free open-source operating system Linux.  Hams are tinkerers by nature, and the Linux OS is an ongoing creation by the tinkerers of the computer world.  Most of us have our favorite Windows programs and are used to dealing with the highs and LOWS of depending on Microsoft.  Linux had become a worthy alternative to Windows with thousands of free programs that will let you perform 99% of what most of us use a PC for (email, web surfing, word processing, etc).  It is lean, fast and best of all, runs very well on older machines.  Yes, there are also ham radio applications that Mert will demonstrate.

Please contact me if there are any other items that should be added to the agenda.
